Nerja is one of the prettiest Andalusian towns on the Costa del Sol. Whilst offering more than 80 restaurants, various internet cafés, cafeterias, ice cream parlours and over 45 bars, Nerja manages to retain all the rustic charm of the small fishing village it used to be.
Balcon de Europa The Balcón de Europa is the focal point of the town and is lined with cafés and restaurants and in the summer months is a hive of activity until late at night. By day the views of the coast from the Balcón are stunning and make a great place to stop for drinks or lunch. The Balcón also homes the El Salvador Church, its interior famous for its 18th century frescoes decorating the Evangeline nave and the contemporary mural of the annunciation by the painter Francisco Hernandez.
Beaches Many of the natural cliffs rising behind the sandy beaches play home to parrots and other wildlife and are perfect for lazy days enjoying the sun and sea. The Burriana beach offers everything for the more adventurous beach-goer, as well as a wide variety of restaurants and bars. From banana boats and jet skis to scuba diving and kayaks, the Burriana beach guarantees a good day out.
Places to Visit Located at the very eastern tip of the town are the Caves of Nerja. Discovered in modern times in 1959 the caverns stretch for almost 5kms and make an amazing afternoon out. The Donkey Sanctuary is always worth a visit, with donkeys, horses, sheep, pigs, rabbits, dogs and cats, they offer a "Kids Club" on a Saturday morning. Children are welcome virtually everywhere and with live Flamenco Shows, Parrot Shows and live music; you’ll find entertainment for all the family. Plaza Tutti Frutti offers a livelier variety of nightlife with Irish, Spanish and Mexican bars.
Weather Nerja boasts an average of around 320 days of sun per year, of which 200 are virtually cloudless. With the Mediterranean Sea in front and the protective Granada mountains behind, Nerja enjoys a sunnier and more temperate climate than other areas of the region.
